Resolution to Adopt a Bilingual Policy
Whereas: A significant portion of the Rhode Island community speaks Spanish as their first or only language, and language barriers can prevent full participation in the democratic socialist movement;
Whereas: Rhode Island DSA is committed to building solidarity among all working-class individuals and communities, regardless of their primary language;
Whereas: Providing materials and resources in Spanish as well as English aligns with the principles of inclusivity, accessibility, and solidarity fundamental to democratic socialism;
Whereas: Formalizing language-learning opportunities fosters stronger bonds within the chapter and empowers members to communicate effectively and inclusively;
Be it resolved: Rhode Island DSA shall officially adopt a bilingual policy with English and Spanish as the primary languages, striving to provide all official flyers, online content, and public materials in both languages;
Be it further resolved: Rhode Island DSA will actively cultivate a pool of volunteer Spanish translators and interpreters, making them available upon request to ensure chapter events and meetings are accessible to all members and participants.
Be it further resolved: Rhode Island DSA will work on creating an officially recognized Spanish Learning Program open to all chapter members interested in collaboratively learning and improving their Spanish language skills;
Be it further resolved: By January 2026 the RI DSA website and actively used promotional materials, literature, and future written articles will have a Spanish translated version, and the chapter will have a functioning Spanish Learning Program.
