Resolution to Seek Office Space

Passed by membership: February 27, 2026

Rationale

Whereas:

  • RI DSA is outgrowing Red Ink Community Library for several regular meeting types

  • RI DSA has had to resort to booking space across Providence/Pawtucket at public libraries, members’ apartments and private venues

  • Meetings would benefit from climate control, DSA-managed layout, organization and cleanliness

  • Meetings would benefit from a permanent Zoom setup to improve the meeting experience for both virtual and in-person attendees

  • Meetings would benefit from on-site supply storage and printing capabilities

  • Meetings would benefit from the freedom to host chapter meetings later than public library closing times

  • Meetings for strike support or workers’ panels would benefit from on-site builds of organizing materials, strike pantry storage and the ability to rapidly reserve space

  • RI DSA non-executive membership would benefit from being able to reserve space

  • Member engagement (a 2026 Executive Committee focus) would benefit from having an intentionally curated and maintained space by and for RI DSA

  • RI DSA has been growing at a rapid pace over the last several months

    • RI DSA grew by 32% (75 members) in 2025

  • RI DSA must continue growing in order to be a meaningful proponent of the socialist movement

  • Further upcoming crises of Capitalism, such as ICE brutality, war with Venezuela/Cuba/Greenland/Iran, Greater Israel project, Epstein Files fallout, impending Recession/AI bubble burst, will drive increasing recruitment/interest in DSA

Resolve

Be it resolved:

  • Be it resolved that RI DSA commits to securing a dedicated, ongoing office and organizing space for the chapter, and will take concrete steps toward doing so in 2026.

  • RI DSA will create a temporary, non-voting Office Planning Committee that will:

    • Submit a survey to the general body gathering feedback on what attributes they want from an office space

    • Find suitable rental spaces & record information on them

    • Determine furnishing needs and budget

    • Determine layout and interior design of space

    • Determine office space fundraising strategy

    • Bring an option to GBM for vote

    • After space selection, will compile and bring full plan to GBM for vote

    • Follow this rubric

      • Holds RI DSA supplies and up to 12 people comfortably

      • Either holds up 60 people or has a reservable room with capacity of up to 60 people

      • Available till at least 10pm daily, 7 days/week

      • Reasonably accessible by public transportation from Providence

      • ADA Accessible

      • Private and secure

      • Ability to grant access easily by DSA membership
